Mr Lee talked about how he succeeded Mr Goh as the new PM:
[Translated from video (21:40 to 22:25)]
“Last time, when I was appointed as PM, there was also no official voting. At the time, a few ministers were having a meal together – this we have mentioned before. It was (then) Minister Wong Kan Seng who invited the ministers for the meal.
During the meal, everyone agreed to let me take up the responsibility (as PM). After this, we have a meeting with our PAP MPs to discuss (the matter), telling them that the ministers have made their decision and the PAP MPs also supported (the decision). So, this was how the party decided.
If there were 2 opposing persons (contesting the PM position) in the party, and required an election (in the party), it would be a very complicated situation.”
[Note: The meal was either referring to a lunch or dinner. The Chinese words mentioned was "Chi Fan" (i.e, makan). PM Lee did not specifically say if it was a lunch or dinner. Whatever it is, it is known that the "makan" was organized by then Minister Wong Kan Seng.]
